A Romantic Stay for your Valentine

February 12th, 2010
Romance Under the StarsRomance Under the Stars at a Campground

Do you prefer sleeping outdoors in a campground to chatting with strangers at bed and breakfasts? Is riding a hotel elevator to the 20th floor, searching for your room number not your idea of a romantic getaway? February doesn’t have to rule out camping locations with your special someone.

Campgrounds like Kampgrounds of America (KOA) have become more sophisticated, even offering lodges with bathrooms, kitchens, heating and air conditioning. In other words, the prices are still good, but your Valentine won’t have to “rough it” to spend a cozy night with you by the fire.

Best Location in Barcelona: Grau Hostel

February 12th, 2010
Grau Hosteria

The center of Barcelona, or Plaza Catalunya is not normally where I recommend that people stay when they come to visit me in Barcelona. It is too chaotic and noisy in the city center for my taste, and usually I suggest hotels and hostels that are tucked into side-streets or in quieter parts of Barcelona’s many barrios.

Grauis the exception to my rule. One block off of the city’s most central drag, staying at Grau doesn’t feel like staying in the city’s main hub, but gives you all the advantages of being right in the thick of it. The metro, bus, taxis, many bars, restaurants, cafes, boutiques and sites are within walking distance from Grau.

Seminyak – Bali, The Heaven in Earth

February 10th, 2010

Where Ubud is all about spiritually and culture, Seminyak is known for exquisite beaches, great shopping and fine dining. Seminyak is very popular with resident expatriates and land accommodation prices are amongst the highest on Bali. Luxury spas and hotels abound, as do high-end shopping establishments and fine-dining restaurants.

Seminyak is a shopper’s paradise. There are plenty of branded boutiques, including some that I’m familiar with from Jakarta and others that are completely new to me. And if you ever get tired of shopping, if that’s possible, you can pop into one of the fine-dining restaurants managed by foreigners and locals or any one of the hundreds of cool bars.

The Hungarian Wine Story

February 4th, 2010

It was a wine tasting gone amok, like one that should be happening in the world of nocturnal dreams instead. I saw rooms and rooms of bottles, with more than 50 of them open to try, but almost nothing on the labels sounded or looked familiar.

What is a Szekszárdi Kadarka supposed to taste like? Or a Borpalota Szürkebarát? What kind of a grape is a kéknyelű?

Staying In Playa Del Carmen

February 1st, 2010

The beautiful seaside coastal town of Playa del Carmen is located in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Playa as it is known locally is slightly lesser known than its famous neighbor, Cancun which is located about 70 kilometers away. While Cancun is more known for its partying and nightlife, Playa is a slightly more laidback in contrast but no less popular.
