Do you prefer sleeping outdoors in a campground to chatting with strangers at bed and breakfasts? Is riding a hotel elevator to the 20th floor, searching for your room number not your idea of a romantic getaway? February doesn’t have to rule out camping locations with your special someone.
Campgrounds like Kampgrounds of America (KOA) have become more sophisticated, even offering lodges with bathrooms, kitchens, heating and air conditioning. In other words, the prices are still good, but your Valentine won’t have to “rough it” to spend a cozy night with you by the fire.
I’m the first to admit that I would not be happy if my Valentine mentioned camping at Crater Lake in the winter. However, a day of wine tasting in Napa, Cloverdale or Healdsburg, California, ending with an overnight at a lodge with lake views. Now that sounds good to me.
My husband prefers fishing to five star resorts, while I like the idea of staying at an affordable lodge. Here are five “Romantic Hot Spots” that won’t break your bank account this Valentine’s Day.
Five Romantic Hot Spots
1. Wine Tasting and Lake Views in Cloverdale/Healdsburg KOA, California
2. Beachfront Resort in Sugarloaf Key/Key West KOA, Florida
This beachfront resort is set between the Atlantic Ocean in the Keys area of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.
3. San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA, California
Only 35 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, this campground offers a more affordable way to visit San Francisco as long as you have your own vehicle. I’m told there’s even a hot tub at this KOA.
4. Astoria/Warrenton/Seaside KOA, Oregon
I’m curious about this campground as it offers bike rentals, an internet cafe that serves espresso and an indoor pool and hot tub. Located in Hammond, Oregon, tucked by the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, I’m sure this place is beautiful on a clear day.
5. South Padre Island KOA, Texas
This location is billed as the ‘upscale’ camping resort, situated between Laguna Madre Bay in South Padre Island, Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. The property offers waterfront lodges with decks overlooking the bay. There is also an onsite restaurant and fitness room for burning off all that chocolate you ate during Valentine’s Day.
Have you stayed at a KOA Campground? Leave me a comment with your experiences. Perhaps I’ll have a chance to check one of these hot spots out during spring break?
