The Spanish owned Canary Islands are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. And little wonder – as this archipelago of seven islands is blessed with great weather all year round, wonderful beaches and plenty of excellent places to stay.

Over the course of any given year the Canaries welcome in the region of 9 million tourists – placing them behind Catalonia alone as the most visited destination in Spain. And this is thanks in no small part to the incredible climate – which led to them once being dubbed the Fortunate Islands. Certainly tourists today are very unfortunate if they experience any rain or bad weather here as the climate is much like an eternal spring – even in winter time!

Lanzarote is the third most popular of the islands as a holiday destination after Gran Canaria and Tenerife and is very popular with visitors from the UK and Eire. Many of whom arrive on cheap flights to Lanzarote with carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet. With flights from the UK taking around four hours.

In terms of accommodation visitors really are spoilt for choice as there is an abundance of great places to stay across the island. Around half of all visitors book Lanzarote hotels – with the balance staying in either Lanzarote villas or apartments. Often at prices well below the rates charged on many other Spanish holiday islands.

That’s partly due to the fact that the season on Lanzarote doesn’t end after just a few summer months as is the case on Balearic Islands such as Ibiza and Mallorca. Making Lanzarote much more affordable as a holiday destination. Car hire is also much cheaper here –as is eating out too – so tourists also spend less once they have arrived.

There are three main resorts on the island as well as plenty of places to stay in the countryside. With loads for visitors to see and do. Such as the unique creations of the artist Cesar Manrique, over 90 beaches and the incredible and surreal scenery of the Timanfaya Volcano Park. Scene of huge eruptions in the 1730´s.

The island is also ideal for kids and families as there are tailor made attractions such as the Rancho Texas Theme Park and Lanzarote A Caballo. Where children can learn to ride camels and ponies. As well as the birdlife on show at the Guinate Tropical Park which is located in the north of the island.
