It’s an odd thing about cruising that many of the highlights are not on board, but on shore! Well, that’s fine: relaxing nights on the ship, good food and friends and all that, then shopping and sightseeing and excursions in each new port of call. But making sure those ports of call live up to their promise is not as easy as you might expect, and many passengers have experiences they’d prefer to forget!

Cruise Ship Docking at St Thomas

After a long time thinking about the shore excursion marketplace, Viator now offers a very diverse and rapidly growing range of shore excursions as an alternative to the cruise line offerings. Here are some of the reasons you might want to consider us, next time you cruise:

Don’t be taken for granted!

As a passenger you are a captive market, and the cruise lines do tend to charge premium prices for a limited range of shore excursions. You can, on the one hand, rush to the sign-ups on board, get your name down for whatever’s left, pay full price (or more!), and then get treated like the people who bought the cheap seats when you’re on shore. Well, you wanted to do this excursion, and you had no choice, right?

Wrong! Your alternative is to check out Viator’s offerings in your ports of call before you leave home. You’ll find an extensive product range, reviews by actual customers like you, and excellent pricing.

Don’t be one of the crowd!

Relax as the rest of the herd race off, sheep-like, when you reach port. Your personal driver and tour guide await you, and you can take a little more time about everything. As Dee explained in her review of our Grand Cayman Shore Excursion: West Bay Sightseeing Tour:

“This was the trip of the a lifetime!!! The tour consisted of my family and another couple, therefore we didn’t feel rushed. We could ask as many questions as we wanted. Leonardo was very knowledgeable and made our tour run. For this reason we are glad that we booked our shore excursion independently.”

And here’s the big payoff: tonight, over dinner, when your fellow diners note that they didn’t see you on shore today, you can let slip that “We took a private tour that we arranged a few weeks ago…” One-upmanship works best when you are actually on a ship, don’t you know?

Just relax!

One of the concerns cruise passengers often have about “3rd-party” shore excursions is that they’ll get left behind as their ship leaves port. Really? Look, it just doesn’t happen. All our operators are tuned-in to the comings and goings of the cruise ships, and will always have you back in port on time. And just in case you still don’t believe me, Viator shore excursions come with a Worry-Free Guarantee:

We will ensure your timely return to port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. See our terms and conditions for full details.

And also: if you booked a shore excursion for Monday and for some reason you don’t arrive in that port until Tuesday, don’t worry, we already know. We’ll be there!

Finally…

We also do transfers, to and from airports, hotels and your cruise ship. In places like Rome, (where making your way to Civitavecchia from the city is such a hassle that passengers worry about it for weeks in advance) our Private Transfer is a Godsend. As SylviaIan C states in their review:

“I was very impressed with this transfer. The driver arrived early. It was a nice car – black Mercedes. He was very professional and very handsome. I arrived at the port ahead of schedule. I would not hesitate to use this service again.”

Viator transfers are available in many cities around the world; browse our site for all the details.

At times I find myself being possessed by Mr. Bean. And what’s so wrong with Mr. Bean also if the names of places were such that you would just want to go on repeating them like a moron again and again. Now take for example – Rabo. And now keep saying that name a million times to yourself. Like not slowly…go fast and there will be the place of your dream vacation spot. So, yes…go Rabo – Rabo – Rabo – Rabo – Rabo – Rabo – Rabo – raBO – bo-RA – Bora – Bora – Bora. Woah, yes that it is!

The very first image to weave on someone’s mind would that be of a sultry spot nestled right in the heart of the Pacific. Well, am not on any honeymoon before you might think so. Like stereotypes are a little hard to put with at times. And one such false notion attached with the Bora Bora Islands is that the place is only dedicated to the lovey-dovey type crowds. A picturesque location that it is attracts a million visitors each year, though, not as much as the neighboring Tahiti Islands, but its smaller expanse makes the island more personalized and very very exotic.

To get to Bora Bora, I flew to the International Airport of Papetee that is situated on one of the prime islands of Tahiti. To the northwest of Tahiti by 143 miles were the Bora Bora islands, and the best way to get there was either through means of a helicopter that provides excellent views of the turquoise waters, the sight of which instills great exuberance before even hitting the spot. Then there’s also ferry that provides access to the island. Even Tahiti cruises are a great means for transportation.

As I stepped on the vivacious islands of the Bora Bora, not only I was but anyone who goes there would be in absolute awe of the beautiful landscape that boasts rocky mountains nestled by lagoons and inlets laced by a coral reef. What you should not miss is the Mount Otemanu, a gigantic rock structure that ascends as high as up to a height of two thousand five hundred feet. Adjacent to this marvel of nature, is the two thousand feet high Mount Pahia. Because of these forest covered mountains, hikers find the islands to be no less than a paradise.

Owing to the picture-perfect beaches of Bora Bora, the island emerges as a perfect spot when it comes to the activities of snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving. The turquoise waters are a great spectacle into the marine life which is absolutely splendid and enticing. The best way to get around the beach is by hiring a car or also a bike that can smooth maneuvers one into the by lanes of Bora Bora.

Most definitely to be once in a lifetime experience visiting the Bora Bora Islands, don’t forget your sun screen lotion as the shiny sun can be a little too bright.

Along the river Main, a series of bands are cranking out the old classics on temporary stages. The crowds are joyously bouncing along and the food stands are doing a roaring trade in everything from sausages in bread rolls to ostrich steaks and Indian curries. The south bank is packed, as people browse the market stalls, chug down glasses of wine and cocktails from the hastily-erected bars. The whole kerfuffle is tremendous fun; there’s a festival atmosphere, and everyone is clearly intent on letting their hair down and enjoying the day.

Business, Meet Pleasure

Now, if you had to guess which city I’m talking about, chances are that Frankfurt wouldn’t spring immediately to mind. It doesn’t quite fit with the reputation, does it? Frankfurt is generally seen to be a stodgy business city, where soulless corpses in suits attend trade fairs and talk shop. It is known for banking (the European Central Bank is amongst the many international financial organizations based here), having a busy hub airport and very little else.

Work hard and play hard in Frankfurt

It’s surprising, therefore, to find this much-maligned German city instantly likable. This is partly because the center is incredibly compact. Just about all the shopping, business and other amenities you’d associate with a busy metropolis are within a one kilometer radius of an imaginary central point. The main ‘tourist’ area around the cathedral and town hall is very small; there are a few pretty old-style buildings with souvenir shops and restaurants thrown in. And they are very much old style rather than old – Frankfurt was as good as destroyed by carpet-bombing during the Second World War, and everything was rebuilt from scratch. It looks pretty, but it’s fake – you’re looking at clever paint jobs rather than natural stone.

The northern part of that imaginary semi-circle is very much devoted to shopping. The Zeil is one of Europe’s busiest shopping streets and its new addition – the spectacular-looking MyZeil Shopping Centre – gives an extra excuse to flex the plastic. But while the Zeil is a glorified high street, Goethestrasse and the surrounding side streets attract the serious designer labels.

And that just leaves the part that Frankfurt is best known for: the banking district. Given that there are over 300 banks in the city, this area is incredibly small. Well, it is if you measure it by footprint anyway. These banks aren’t averse to showing off their wealth, and this means that most of them decide to house themselves in flashy skyscrapers. Frankfurt is unabashed when it describes itself as a high rise city. For a start, the skyscrapers create a point of difference with other German cities – most don’t allow buildings above a certain height. Secondly, they have become visitor attractions in their own right. The Deutsche Bank and Bank of Japan buildings are pretty cool to gawp at, while the Sir Norman Foster-designed Commerzbank building is an absolute show-stopper (particularly when viewed from the east).

Unfortunately, the only skyscraper you can go to the top of is the Main Tower. There’s a restaurant on the 53rd floor, and a 360 degree observation platform on the 55th. The views from the top, 200m up, are spectacular. You can see the city spread beneath you, but also the mountains (alright, big hills) that make for popular weekend retreats.

Welcome to the ‘Burbs

The surprising thing is how little sprawl there is. The tag often applied to Frankfurt – the world’s smallest metropolis – is pretty apt. The city itself barely makes a dent in the surrounding forest.
With the business end of things neatly taken care of in the centre, the rest of the city is free to get on with life. Different areas have different quirks and characters, and strolling through the suburbs, it becomes obvious why Frankfurt is voted one of the best places to live in the world.

Many of the suburbs are leafy, genteel places where you just might find a Michelin-starred restaurant inside an elegant side-street mansion. But that would be to suggest that Frankfurt is a sleepy place; it most certainly isn’t. Bergerstrasse is the city’s longest, and arguably liveliest, street. It is lined with small independent shops, gelato parlors and the sort of café that you just want to sit outside all day, watching the world go by. As the street enters Bornheim, there are also a series of really good bars, wine cellars and traditional apple wine taverns.

Tables waiting for hungry and thirsty patrons on Alt-Sachsenhausen

Here for the Beer

Of course, if it’s the latter you’re after, Alt-Sachsenhausen south of the river is the place to head to. The cobbled streets here host wall to wall pubs and restaurants. The apple wine taverns tend to be the best options here – some of the other bars can feel a little seedy. They all have plenty of wooden benches outside – there’s something of a Munich beerhall look, but without being inside a vast building – and most will serve up local specialties. In terms of food, these are best skipped (the ‘green sauce’ that Frankfurters are so bizarrely proud of is awful), but the apple wine is worth a try. Realistically, it’s a flat cider. But never fear, if you don’t like it, there are big glasses of lovely German beer to work through.

And work through it they do in Alt-Sachsenhausen. It’s a rare night indeed where it’s quiet here – an indication that while Frankfurt knows how to work hard, it most certainly knows how to play hard as well. This is something that shows in the number of festivals in the city, scattered throughout the year.

I just so happen to have arrived during one of them. A few beers in, a snack or two, and a couple of punk rock versions of famous songs later and I’ve completely forgotten about Europe’s busiest cargo terminal, single currencies and booksellers’ conventions. What Frankfurt is famous for isn’t what it’s really about; there’s as much pleasure as business.

Waterfalls are known to be the most amazing and the most exciting places on the earth. They are the most adventurous places on the planet. The waterfalls are splendid and offer ‘breathtaking” sites and astounding beauty to see.

Though the waterfalls have been regarded as the most beautiful place on the world, yet there are some waterfalls which have earned the reputation of being the most damgerous and the most deadly ones.

The Howick Falls in South Africa is known to be the most deadly and the most dangerous fall in the world. The fall is about 95 m tall and is famously referred by the Zulu people as the “Place of the Tall One”. This waterfall is believed to have recoreded around 40 deaths most of them being suicides and accidents, but murders have been listed here also. Despite the tragic occurings, this fall still claims to be the most amazing tourist destination in South Africa.

The Bash Bish Falls in Massachusetts is known to be the most lovely waterfalls but is one of the most dangerous falls in the United States. The fall drops from 61 meters and is located at the Taconic Mountains. This is rated as the most highest fall in the United States. More than 25 deaths have been recoreded at the place here. These deaths have been reported due to drowning, rock climbing and jumping down into the river from a height. Swimming is not allowed in the area.

Another deadly falls is the Canyon Falls in Washington. This fall drops from a height of 40 meteres into the river North Fork Skykomish. This fall has reported numerous deaths and year 1994 , recorded a murder of a nineteen year old.

Hamilton Falls in Vermont is another fall which falls at a depth of 125 ft into the river. This fall is considered to be another deadliest waterfall due to the number of deaths which have been reported.

These are some of the major falls in the United States which are popular tourist areas and are known all around for being the world’s most deadliest waterfalls.

You can find accommodation in these areas. There are a number of resorts, hotels and lodges in the area.

With limited time to spend in Bali, we decided that a tour of the island would be a great way to sample what the island has to offer. Having gotten some advice on “must-sees” from friends who were recently in Bali, we opted for “Bali, Kintamani Volcano,Ubud and Barong Dance Full Day Tour.” We stayed in Sanur on the water, and were picked up at our hotel. Our tour guide, Sandy, a Balinese local, was enthusiastic and had a wealth of knowledge about Bali.

View from Hotel Beach

Understanding the Local Culture

Before getting a mile out of town, the group’s curiosity about the offerings that can be seen all over Bali got the best of us. Sandy explained that the offerings, or banten, are common ritual in Balinese Hinduism. What we were seeing were canang, the palm leaf trays filled with flowers and food offerings, meant to express thanks to the good spirits and to placate the demons to prevent them from disturbing life’s harmony. These offerings are made daily and can be seen all over Bali– in temples, store fronts, homes, etc.

Our first stop was to watch Barong dancing. Sandy explained to us that theater and dancing are a central part of Balinese culture, and that Barong dancing exemplifies the unique form of Hinduism that exists in Bali. We walked into the outdoor theater and as we were taking our seats, we were showered by the traditional music being played to the side of the stage by an ensemble of nearly 20 performers. Listening to the music and waiting in the heat for the performance to begin, I almost fell into a trance. The costumes used in the performance are elaborate, colorful and fun. The Barong, the “Lord of the Forest,” is a mythical creature, half dog, half lion and his costume requires two performers, one to fill the front and one the back. The story told typifies the Balinese culture, and the constant balancing act between good and evil.

Next, shopping!

Next we visited a local silver shop, followed by a stop at a wood carving shop. At both places we were able to see the masters of trade at work. Bali is known for its wood work, and there were some amazingly elaborate pieces on display and for sale. Sandy explained that some of the larger works required a full year of labor to complete– watching the artists carefully at work, I could understand why! The prevalence of Hinduism was dominate in many of the sculpted pieces and Sandy was happy to share with us the significance of the figures.

On our way to lunch near Mount Kintamani, we stopped at the rice fields outside of Ubud. I never knew so many shades of green existed! As we waited for the sun to come out from behind the clouds for the “perfect photo opp,” I took in the terraced sea of green. At this stop, more than others, we noticed that the locals were accustomed and ready for tourists– they were aggressively hopeful that we would buy their crafts. Our buffet lunch overlooking Mount Kintamani was delicious and filling. The area surrounding the volcano is lush and green, making the black blanket of cooled lava flow that stretches the side of the mountain appear all the more dramatic.

Sandy made a special stop for us at an agrotourism coffee farm. The farm included a small botanical garden and we were greeted by locals, happy to have us sample their freshly roasted coffee. It was so delicious that we made a quick stop at their store to purchase some beans to bring home.

A Place of Worship

The tour includes two stops at temples, first the Holy Springs (Gunung Kawi Temple) and the last stop of the day the Elephant Cave at Goa Gajah. At both temple entrances there were sarongs for borrow, as it is improper to enter a temple with one’s knees exposed. Sandy walked us through the holy springs, situated in lush jungle, and showed us the holy baths. Offerings abounded, and it was clear why this serene setting was chosen as a place of worship. As the name suggests, the Elephant Cave is an elaborately sculpted cave that resembles an elephant. Before the deluge of tourists, this was a place of worship where people would meditate within the Elephant Cave for hours or days.

Driving Home

Our drive back to the hotel corresponded with rush hour and the streets were crowded with motorbikes. Before the trip I’d toyed with the idea of renting a motorbike and touring around the island. On the drive home, a huge sense of relief set in when I realized what I would have been getting myself into had I attempted to weave in and out of traffic with hundreds of other riders. I was happy to be in the van with Sandy.

In the ultimate stopover city, it’s possible to cram a surprising amount into a day in Singapore. Whether it’s taking in sobering World War II history, investigating giant Buddhist temple complexes or eating out in the sky, there’s plenty of variety to keep any short-term visitor occupied.

Taoist style temple

Dine on the Singapore Flyer

Given that rivals are being constructed across the world, it’s unlikely that the Singapore Flyer will hold onto its title as the “World’s Biggest Observation Wheel” for long. But for now, it is the king of big wheels – 30m taller than the London Eye – and a ride on it is a great way to look out over Singapore.
One revolution on the wheel takes approximately half an hour, and the glass capsules ensure great views of the city as it goes round. It’s possible to see highlights such as the starting grid of the Grand Prix circuit and the remarkable Marina Bay Sands resort, with its giant rooftop boat on top of three sleek towers.
It’s spectacular in itself, but for the hungry there’s another unique option available. The Singapore Flyer offers ‘sky dining’ where you eat as you go round.
Taking the sky dining option gives you two revolutions – one for starters, one for main – as a butler serves drinks. It feels somewhat absurd; tablecloths are a starched white, the butler is dressed at his smartest and the food comes in lovingly presented form. Yet at the same time you’re on an enormous wheel, watching the light show on the arms that hold the capsules.
Dessert is served in a special VIP lounge once the second rotation is completed, and the views from the terrace outside are equally good – Singapore looks pretty special once lit up at night.

Haw Par Villa

Set up by the founders of the Tiger Balm dynasty, Haw Par Villa is an exceptionally strange Chinese take on a theme park. The grounds are full of pagodas and odd statues of round-headed tigers, rats and smiley dragons. But the real highlight is the Ten Courts of Hell exhibit.
This is supposed to be a lesson in morality, but it ends up being a graphically gory romp through the punishments that naughty boys are believed to undergo in the afterlife.
A series of a dioramas feature heavily-painted demons instigating numerous grizzly tortures under the watchful gaze of kings, who also act as judges.
The figurines undergoing the marvelously unpleasant procedures – such as having their hearts cut out, being sawed in half or being impaled on a mountain full of knives – are punished according to the crimes they committed while they were alive.
Some would argue that the punishments are somewhat disproportionate to the crimes – especially given that some of them are meted out to people who disrespect their siblings or fail to adhere to a rulebook.
Haw Par Villa is the first stop on Viator’s Round Island tour.

Kranji War Cemetery

Kranji War Cemetery

The second stop on the Round Island Tour is the Kranji War Cemetery, where thousands of Allied soldiers who died defending Singapore in the Second World War are buried. It’s a somber place, with the headstones lined up in neat rows. The sheer expanse of these rows brings a lump to the throat.
At the top of the hill is the Kranji War Memorial, and this is inscribed with 24,346 names. All of them belong to soldiers who died in the World War II, defending Singapore and Malaya.

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery

The Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, also known by brevity fans as the Bright Hill Temple, is a remarkable complex of Buddhist temples, stupas and meditation halls.
It’s the biggest temple in Singapore, and the mishmash of architecture is fascinating. Only one of the buildings has been made in traditional Buddhist style – and that’s the pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas. The central stupa is golden from the outside, but inside it is decorated with thousands of Buddhas as the name would suggest.
The other buildings are constructed in a Taoist style – they’re colourful and covered with intricate carvings of dragons.
But the major highlight is the Venerable Hong Choon Memorial Hall. It is the size of a football pitch and has no interior pillars. That the giant Buddha in the middle manages to dominate the room is testament to how impressive it is.
The Buddha was specially made to order in Taiwan and then reassembled in Singapore. It weighs 55 tons and stands at 13.8m tall.
The hall itself is used as a meditation and prayer area – visitors are requested to remove their shoes and keep silent as they walk through to the Buddha.
Outside, the scent of joss sticks fills the air while the Bodhi tree – a scion off the sacred Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka – is worth a look too. It is surrounded by paper leaves on which hundreds of people have written down their hopes and wishes. It’s rather touching.

Giant Buddha at Bright Hill Temple

Changi Memorial and Chapel

For a truly moving experience, however, the Changi Memorial and Chapel is a must visit. Though no longer on the site of the Changi prison where thousands of Allied servicemen and civilians were held during World War II, it still packs a powerful punch.
The chapel itself is a rather simple outdoor affair, but the museum tells the tale of life under Japanese occupation beautifully. The brutality of the Japanese regime saddens, but the spirit of the people gladdens.
An air of stoic defiance permeates. Quilts made by the female inmates to send simple messages about how they were doing to the men they were kept apart from are on display, while accounts of the concerts put on by the POWs to keep morale up bring a smile to the face.
There are many moving stories on display, and none more so than that of the murals on St Luke’s Chapel. These were painted during the period of Japanese occupation, and were discovered again in 1958.
There was a worldwide search to find the artist, and it turned out to be Stanley Warren – an arts teacher at a London secondary school.
Warren was persuaded to come back and restore the paintings in 1963, but broke down when confronted by the memories of the horrors he and his fellow prisoners were subjected to. They were completed nonetheless, and now the walls of the chapel have been moved – murals and all – into the museum.

From somber to spectacular, there are a number of activities to do while in Singapore. So make a point to visit at least one of these attractions – even if you are in town just for a stopover.

Climbing with porters is not that much adventurous, when you give your burden to someone else. To be honest am against this, hiring of porter while you climb, that is because most of the time we under pay to these porters. Also what is the meaning of mountain climbing without you taking on your back your heavy rucksack! Listings below are those mountains which don’t require much of expertise in climbing and definitely can be done, without a porter. Where you can pick up your own burden and just go climbing.

Mount Olympus, Greece

This is some sought of magical, isn’t it! Something about Zeus and Haedes, you shall be rubbing your hiking boots with gods when you ascend the Greece’s highest mountain, the legendary domicile of all the Olympian gods. Mt Olympus still flakes in worshippers of sort, but for trekkers, this is two-day climb for reaching to its highest peak, the Mytikas (2918m). The most popular and common trail for going up the mountain begins at tiny settlement of the Prionia, which is 18km from Litohoro. From here it’s a 2½-hour climb to point Refuge A, with summit of the Mytikas which is about three hours more further. Once at peak don’t forget to give in your signature at the visitors’ register. It’s achievable to climb as well as descend in just two days. It will all be exciting!

Start: from Refuge A which is near Prionia.

Gunung Bromo, Indonesiatr

Adding adventure and thrill, then climb Gunung Bromo, Indonesia. Rising from crater floor of the Java’s huge Tengger crater, there are three volcanic-peaks. The peak which is puffing and smoking of Gunung Bromo (2392m) is smallest of all three but it’s the only one that can be climbed. The most popular and easiest route is from the Cemoro Lawang, which is crater rim that can be accessed from city of the Probolinggo. The route encompasses the crater’s Sand Sea, and just in an hour you’ll be on standing on summit of Bromo, savoring vistas of the steaming crater. Magnificent isn’t it! Like any other mountains in world over, the favored time for reaching the summit is at sunrise. Travel agencies in Java’s Solo and even in Yogyakarta can book you for minibuses ( though don’t expect much of top quality!) to Bromo for something IDR100,000–150,000.

Table Mountain, South Africa

This one is easy and so much fun, with flat-topped and just 1086m-High Table Mountain, giving Cape Town a backdrop of visual splendor. Table Mountain is said to have more than three hundred walking paths. For most of the people, nonetheless, it’s about getting to peak, and pronto. For this, take route through Platteklip Gorge, very beautiful all the way and most straightforward. The gentlest climb is the Jeep Track, through Back Table, even though gentle incline, this one is longest approaches to reach the summit. The Platteklip Gorge route will take two- three hours while climbing up; but you can descend in just about in four minutes via the cable car. Once reaching on top, admire the view of ocean and Cape Town, along with some people watching as there is well-catered although expensive cafe at the flat top of the Table Mountain.

Mount Sinai, Egypt

Moses had climbed it and then carried back stone tablets, but all required for you is sleeping bag and warm clothing if you wish to be on peak for requisite sunrise vigil atop Mount Sinai, signature mountain of Sinai Peninsula. The climb begins at UNESCO World Heritage–listed and famous St Catherine’s Monastery, from where follow camel trail, or opt for sweating out the sins on the sacred Steps of Repentance. The 2285m summit will offer you stunning scenic views that will leave you gapping at such as bare desert surrounding, serrated mountains and plummeting valleys. The summit is reached in some two hours if chose the camel trail. While on ascend, choose the path of desert trails which is all zigzagging on the mountainous side and when descending down choose the aptly named of 3750 steps sacred Steps of Repentance. You may also stay back if tired; accommodation is available around the St Catherine’s Monastery.

Mount Fuji, Japan

This one is must on your trip to Japan, Mount Fuji is said to be most climbed mountain in the world, and one which is certainly amongst the most recognizable. Mount Fuji is highest mountain in Japan which is rising to 3776m, as seen from far distance from Tokyo. The official climbing season is from July to August, although I suggest off peak season will be better for avoiding crowds that can be said as large as mountain itself. The climbing up starts from traditional starting points, from their it takes 4½ hours. Plan in such a way that you reach the summit at the time for dawn as you can witness the sunrise and beat clouds at the top. From Tokyo, you can take express bus from the Shinjuko; the journey just takes around 2½ hours and drops at Kawaguchiko 5th Station, from where climb begins.
