Spring Ski Vacation at the Mountain View Grand in New Hampshire

May 14th, 2011
The Exterior of the Mountain View Grand

The winter this year in New England has been pretty brutal, with record snowfall amounts in some areas.  While most New England residents have been complaining, the skiers are rejoicing.  Spring skiing this month is better than ever – with lots of snow still on the slopes, but nice mild temperatures!

Take advantage of ski season at Cannon Mountain, in Franconia Notch, which has received over 200 inches of snow.  The Mountain View Grand, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, is offering a great deal for spring skiers wanting to get a few more trips down the slopes in before the thaw.  Midweek, you can stay at the resort for $99 and you can ski or ride at Cannon Mountain for free, with the Mountain View Grand Ski and Stay Package.  This rate is per person, per night (based on double occupancy, plus tax).  Guests will receive two complimentary Cannon Mountain ski tickets per room per night’s stay.

The Mountain View Grand is a gorgeous landmark hotel offering several onsite restaurants, a spa, a farm, an indoor pool, and an outdoor pool.  It’s a wonderful family-friendly resort – perfect for your end-of-the-season ski getaway.

A Mansion on the Plaza in Patzcuaro, Mexico

March 27th, 2011
Inside of Mansion Hotel Iturbe in Patzcuaro

Like many cities in Mexico, Patzcuaro is a great place for strolling. At Mansion Hotel Iturbe, you can be right in the thick of things as soon as you walk out the door.
Crafts from Michoacan adorn every wall and surface

This evocative hotel, which is in a converted 18th-century mansion, faces the city’s main square: Plaza Vasco de Quiroga. This is a manicured, shady park surrounded by cafes, shops with local crafts, and ice cream stands. The latter sell flavors you’ve never heard of and others you probably don’t want to try, like tequila, cheese, and corn.

From there you can walk to centuries-old churches, a few interesting museums and a maze-like local market. If you take a tour or hire a driver, the villages around Patzcuaro Lake are some of the best spots in Mexico for buying handicrafts at a great price.

Mansion Hotel Iturbe is a great place to return to when you’re through. There is an open-air courtyard, plus a reading room on the top floor for perusing the coffee table books on Mexico or playing games. At night the staffers set up tea sets in the hallway and there’s a small bar and coffee shop on the first floor with sidewalk seating across from the park.

Rates here, which start at only $85 per night double, also include a scrumptious full breakfast in the Doña Paca restaurant. (See some Patzcuaro breakfast shots at this link.) You can get wimpy pancakes or French toast, but stronger palates should go for one of the local specialties with eggs and spicy salsa.

Reading room at Mansion Iturbe.

Rooms have high beamed ceilings and original shutters that do an amazing job of keeping out noise and the morning light. TVs, safes, and robes and standard and Internet access is complimentary.

Sleeping in a historic Patzcuaro mansion

The Lord & Mayfair products in the toiletries basket are nice, but if you have too many drinks in the gaucho-themed music bar on the first floor, they’ve got something for that too: packets of Alka-Seltzer and aspirin.

For more information, visit the Mansion Hotel Iturbe website. For booking this and other inn full of character in Michoacan state, see the Tesoros of Mexico English website.

Private Beach at Family-Run Hotel and Spa, Santa Marta

March 27th, 2011
View from Seaside Rooms at Santa MartaView from Seaside Rooms at Santa Marta

Private Mediterranean beach, a room with a view, tide-pools to explore, lunch under pine trees in the sand….all this can be yours, at least for a night or two, if you book at room at Hotel Santa Marta.

I’ve seen quite a few hotels in Spain and it takes a lot to impress me these days, but Santa Marta did. It is not the hotel exactly, although the hotel is special (more on that in a second), but the place. Such a gem right on the beach is rare along Catalonia’s Costa Brava. The beach in front of the hotel, Playa Santa Cristina is not private in that there are no private beaches in Spain; beaches are public property, as they should be! However, it’s not easy for ‘outsiders’ to get down to Playa Santa Cristina so hotel guests will have the sweet little cove mostly to themselves.

Deluxe Spa at Santa MartaDeluxe Spa at Santa Marta

What’s more, Hotel Santa Marta is set on eight hectares of forested hillside, blocking out neighboring summer homes and the bustle of the outside world. Wake up to bird song and the crashing of the waves on the sand at this family-run hotel.

The hotel was built in 1958 and is very much 60s in style. Usually, this would annoy me, as I am not a huge fan of antiques and 1960′s interior design. Still, something about Santa Marta is so real and  cozy, that the slightly outdated furnishings didn’t bother me. It’s clear throughout this hotel that it is part of a family’s history, and has seen many a party, many a guest, many a festive summer filled with events and life.

Breakfast Room at Santa MartaBreakfast Room at Santa Marta

Most rooms at Santa Marta have been remodeled recently, with the exception of a couple suites which are due to get a face-lift. Rooms are simple, elegant, traditional, done in navy blues and wood with decks off the bedrooms looking out over the Sea or onto the hotel’s ample gardens. Bathrooms are enormous, with bathtubs and showers and all the toiletries provided. There are also double doors on all rooms making them especially quiet.

Lounge AreaLounge Area

The lounge area is a huge room with a wall of windows looking out onto a deck and then to the Sea in the distance. Here guests can relax in one of the many mini-living-room spaces created, some with fireplaces. Off the lounge there are private rooms for meetings, a game room, and another sort of chill out room with a fireplace. Have a glass of cava in the evening in front of the fire and fall in love with this comfortable space, which resembles your rich aunt Maria’s living room, circa 1975.

Rooms at Santa MartaRooms at Santa Marta

The only thing brand-new at Santa Marta is the Spa, which is state-of-the-art. Plan ahead and book a massage in one of their top-notch treatment rooms, or pay about $25 to take a dip in their waterworks area which has a warm pool with massage fountains, a cold plunge, massage showers, a steam room, and a sauna.

Dinner or lunch at Santa Marta’s superb restaurant is pricey but worth it. It’s not necessary to order a first and second course at dinner, as portions are huge. Try their catch of the day for something local and special. In the late Spring and Summer months the hotel puts on a Sunday lunch under its small grove of pines on the beach. The lunch is served Mediterranean buffet style and costs about $65 per person.

Off to the Tide PoolsOff to the Tide Pools

Rooms at Santa Marta start at $200 a night and go up steeply from there. Breakfast is $25 per person, and was the only aspect of Santa Marta that I was unsatisfied with, especially at the rate they are charging (I also didn’t care for the statues in front of the hotel, but that is a matter of personal taste…). Put all three meals onto your room rate for another $140, or venture over to Lloret de Mar by car , one of the Costa Brava’s ugliest beach towns and try to find sustenance (Hotel Santa Marta is quite removed from the tourist trap that is Lloret).

Spring Break at the Holiday Inn Resort in Panama City Beach Florida

February 23rd, 2011

In decades past, spring breakers flocked to Florida destinations like Ft. Lauderdale and Daytona Beach. But thanks to MTV and word of mouth, Panama City Beach (aka PCB) is now one of the leading Spring Break locations in America.

The Large Pool at Holiday Inn Resort in Panama City Beach, FL

If you’re planning on making PCB your Spring Break HQ, the Holiday Inn Resort (formerly the Holiday Inn Sunspree) is probably where you’ll want to book. Its 340 Gulf-front rooms with private balconies and the capacity to sleep up to six, depending on the room.

Ever since MTV started filming Spring Break segments there, the resort has been party central for those that come to town.

It’s situated right on the Gulf of Mexico beach, and the resort has a stage where they hold bikini contests, “macho man” contests, and more. They also bring in corporate sponsors like Australian Gold sun tan lotion and Victoria’s Secret to give away free samples to the guests. And only guests are allowed access to resort-sponsored activities.

Guests of the resort during Spring Break will also get a wristband for their stay good on food and shopping discounts. These wristbands are also good for free or discounted entry into many of the popular Spring Break bars like Club La Vela and Harpoon Harry’s.

For even more things to do during Spring Break (when not partying), check out the Uptake playlist for Panama City Beach.
